Declan Rice Trained Before a Champions League Quarterfinal and We're Treating It Like the Moon Landing
by Terry Tap-In
Right. Terry Tap-In wrote that the football world lost its mind over Declan Rice doing a light jog before the Sporting Lisbon quarterfinal, and fair play, he had a few decent gags in there. The bit about the Pulitzer committee gave me a chuckle. But here's the thing. Terry's looked at this story and seen a man doing shuttle runs. I've looked at this story and seen something far more sinister lurking underneath.
Because in my experience, and I've got about forty years of it which is roughly thirty nine more than Terry, when clubs start leaking training footage of a player before a big European night, it's not about fitness updates. It's about shop windows. Always has been. Always will be.
Think about it. Why would Arsenal's media team make sure every camera in north London was pointed at Rice doing passing drills? Why the "SIGNIFICANT BOOST" headlines planted across every outlet? I'll tell you why. Because someone, somewhere, is sniffing around Declan Rice. And Arsenal want the world to see he's fit. That he's worth every penny of whatever ludicrous fee they're about to demand.
Now before you lot start screaming at me in the comments, hear me out. I'm not saying Rice wants to leave. I'm not saying Arsenal want to sell. But I've been in enough boardrooms to know that when a club films a player doing rondos like he's auditioning for Strictly, there's a conversation happening behind closed doors that you and I aren't privy to.
Back in my day, you didn't film training sessions. You didn't broadcast a man stretching his hamstrings to fourteen million people on social media. You know what we did? We trained. Behind closed gates. With no cameras. And if a player was fit, the manager told you on a Friday afternoon and that was that. No "MASSIVE FOR ARSENAL." No breathless updates from blokes with ring lights in their bedrooms.
The whole thing stinks of a club keeping their options open. You mark my words. By summer there'll be a bid. Could be from Saudi. Could be from Madrid. Could be from one of those American franchises that think they can buy history. But the dominoes are already falling. Rice trains in front of a camera. Sporting see Arsenal at full strength. Arsenal win the tie. Rice's stock goes through the roof. Then bang. A phone rings at the Emirates in July and suddenly Edu's replacement is having a very interesting lunch with a very interesting agent.
Terry thinks this is a story about media hysteria. Bless him. That's the surface level stuff. That's the sort of analysis you get from a generation raised on expected goals and heatmaps. No instinct. No gut feeling. No reading between the lines.
VAR can't tell you this. Your algorithms can't tell you this. But a bloke who's spent his life in football dressing rooms can smell a transfer brewing from three counties away.
Rice will play tomorrow. He'll probably be brilliant. And by August, we'll all be having a very different conversation.
Remember where you heard it first.
