Three in a row. Three. In record time, no less. PSV Eindhoven have just wrapped up the Eredivisie again and they did it before anyone in England could be bothered to notice. That tells you everything you need to know about where we are right now.
In my day, the minute a manager won back to back titles in Holland, half the Premier League was on the phone. Bobby Robson went to PSV. Louis van Gaal came from Ajax. Guus Hiddink. Dick Advocaat. Frank Rijkaard nearly ended up at Spurs at one point, though that might have been a fever dream I had after a particularly rough Tuesday in Hartlepool.
Point is, we used to respect Dutch football. We used to see a bloke dominating the Eredivisie and think, "Right, get him over here, give him a coat and a cup of Bovril, let's see what he can do." Now? Nothing. Silence. Not a whisper.
Peter Bosz has this PSV side playing gorgeous football. Dominant. Ruthless. They've made Feyenoord look ordinary. They've made Ajax look like a heritage project. And the best any English club can manage is a half hearted inquiry about one of their wingers on deadline day.
That's the problem with modern football. We don't want managers who've actually built something anymore. We want blokes with TED Talks and PowerPoint presentations. We want someone who's been an assistant at a fashionable club for eighteen months and talks about "progressive passing lanes" in their interview. Actual trophies? Couldn't care less.
Look at the managerial merry go round in England this season. Clubs sacking people left right and centre. Tottenham just hired De Zerbi with seven games left like it was a takeaway order. Half the Championship is on its third manager of the campaign. And meanwhile, there's a fella in Eindhoven winning titles for fun and nobody's even got his number saved.
Don't get me started on the argument that the Eredivisie is a "farmers' league." I've heard that nonsense for years. You know what? I managed in the Conference South. I know what a farmers' league looks like. It looks like Farnborough on a wet Wednesday when the floodlights are flickering and a cow has wandered onto the car park. The Eredivisie is not that.
PSV have beaten European quality sides this season. They've developed players worth tens of millions. They've played a style of football that most Premier League clubs would sacrifice their naming rights to replicate. But because it's Holland and not the Bundesliga or La Liga, English football looks the other way.
We used to be brave. We used to take punts on foreign managers who'd proven themselves in smaller leagues. Now we recycle the same dozen names. Same agents. Same conversations. It's a closed shop and the Dutch are locked out.
In my day, a chairman would fly to Eindhoven, sit in the stands, watch a couple of matches, shake a hand, and have a deal done by the weekend. Now they'd need three rounds of data analysis, a cultural audit, and a compatibility report from some lad with a laptop who's never stood in a dugout in his life.
Three titles in a row. Record pace. And English football can't even muster a "well done." Shameful.
Peter Bosz won't lose sleep over it, mind. He's too busy winning things. Which is more than most of our lot can say.
