It hasn’t been the smoothest of rides for the passive-aggressive Dutchman since his arrival at Old Trafford. Van Gaal doesn’t handle questions well in the media, particularly when it comes along with a David Moyes stat, or regarding his tactics. His attitude comes across like he has a huge chip on his shoulder and recently Barcelona legend Hristo Stoichkov said some harsh words about him.

Nevertheless, Manchester United are currently sitting in a Champion’s League qualification spot, so MUTV decided now would be the perfect time to show the more human, gentler side of their gaffer.

The documentary took a trip down memory lane with LVG playing football in his youth with his brothers. “I was a slow player so I had to think very quickly,” he explains on the film before adding. “That’s why I developed a tactical level that suits me now as a trainer coach.”

the 63-year-old insisted that although he deserves his disciplinarian label – he’s also very ‘flexible’ before cheekily adding with a cheeky glint “…and my wife knows this!”

Tragedy in 1994

Sadly, van Gaal lost his first wife Fernanda to cancer whilst manager of Ajax in 1994.

“That year, when my wife died, was very difficult for me because I had two young daughters and was manager of the club,”

“My daughters were 15 and 18. You have to restructure your life. I have to say I had very great support off my daughters and that’s why I could continue being manager of Ajax.

“The championship (they won later that season) was a tribute for my wife.”

Ajax legend and fellow countryman Ronald de Boer gave an emotional insight into what the dressing room was like at the club during that period.

“I remember the day like yesterday.”

“He told us he would not be able to coach every session because he had to be with his wife. He was so emotional and I remember the goalie Stanley Menzo came to Louis and gave him the first hug. I still get goosebumps when I think about it.

The documentary certainly did a good job at showing van Gaal to have more positive layers than those that he has bared this season and many big names had positive things to say about the man who is currently in the Old Trafford hot seat. We’re guessing Stoichkov wasn’t invited…
