Dave Whelan Exits As Wigan Chairman But Not Before One Last Gaffe

Dave Whelan made his farewell speech to the Wigan fans yesterday before their game against Cardiff City, or so Whelan thought, they of course played Leeds United but Wheelman’s programme notes suggested otherwise. In the Wheelman’s last written message as the Wigan chairman he wrote…

“Welcome to the DW Stadium for our second home match in five days.’

‘Tonight we welcome Cardiff City and their supporters who have travelled from South Wales for another important Sky Bet Football League Championship fixture.’

Nice one Dave, we’re sure the travelling fans loved that one, before the game Whelan took to centre stage to address the fans and thank them for their support over the years and reminded them just how good he was.“We all remember when we first played at Springfield Park and I bought the club and we were third from bottom of the old fourth division.’

And then, as if the Cardiff gaffe wasn’t enough Whelan took the opportunity to have a dig at the Leeds fans ‘Leeds have not won the cup for 25 years,’ he added. “However, everyone from Leeds we welcome you to Wigan. You are a great club and a great bunch of supporters.”

It’s been a terrible year for Whelan after the Malky Mackay debacle, accusations of racism and then denials of racism by Whelan that further implicated him, Wigan fans will hope that Whelan’s 23 year old Grandson has some more liberal opinions than his calamitous grandfather.
